Deja Vu ??

Feb. 4, 2010
Dear Dr. Butera,
I was writing because I heard about your pet deer, and I also had two pet deer for eighteen years. The first, Flag, was smaller than a button. My Standard Poodle raised him and he believed he was a Standard Poodle. We had him castrated and he slept in the house on his bed with the poodle. We walked up and down the stairs making less noise than the dog ! He sounded like someone with high heeled shoes. He mostly ate Purina dog chow, did not care for horse grain, loved graham crackers, apples, cookies, lettuce. When Flag was about 5 months old, we were told about a doe who had been raised and the people were going to turn her out. As we live in a hunting area, she would have been killed, so we took her and named her April. She loved the cats and groomed them. We fenced in our yard and even thought Flag and April could have jumped out, despite the fence, it was mostly for protection. Flag and April came in at night and when it was buggy. They were wonderful, loving, intelligent animals, who never had anything but a lick for us.
They tied us down a lot because we worried about their safety. As I said, it is a hunting community here, near the Shawnee National Forest,. We adored them and they lived until they got terribly arthritic, at eighteen.
So, when I heard about your deer, I thought it so coincidental that I should get in touch with you. I heard you have a Standard Poodle, too.
Flag and April are treasured memories. Flag was the most beautiful baby of any species that I have ever seen. I carried him daily as I thought that way he would never get to heavy to pick up. Wrong. Anyway, it is wonderful that you have your deer. Maybe we will even meet someday as the connections are so similar.
Most sincerely,
Nancy

Thanks for the treats, Baby!

I received this letter qne these yummy treats on December 28,2009 from a cousin deer, location unknown.
Hi Dillie,
My name is “Baby” and I wanted to write to you to say “Merry Christmas.” I am sending you my favorite cookies. My mom buys these Apple cookies in the farm supply sore. I can smell them before she even gets them into the house and run to greet her at the door. They are yummy. I hope you like them.
I saw your story on the news. It made me very happy to know that Melanie has been taking care of you. I have people that have been taking care of me since last winter. Last winter, I found myself all alone in the woods. I was attacked by a pack of either dogs or coyotes. I’m not sure I could tell the difference. It was such a panic for me. They left bite marks on me and tore my left ear, too. I was starving and weak. Anyway, after a big snow and ice storm, I wandered through the woods and came upon a house that amazingly had a really nice dog. I learned that the dog even has a name. Her mom calls her “Honey Bun.” She didn’t chase me or bite me, but instead licked my wounds and cared for me. I recovered and have grown thanks to the protection of my dog.
Her mom, now my adopted mom, fed me some amazing food, and even made warm oatmeal with molasses for me. Now, my favorite foods are apples, carrots, bananas, corn, the chickens scratch, grains, sheep’s chow, and just about anything else I can find to eat. I eat a lot ! Really I think I like everything. Recently I talked my mom into holding down a honeysuckle branch so I could reach the few remaining green crunchy leaves that were too high for me to reach without some help. I am so lucky that I came to live in the woods by this house. I don’t have a bedroom, or get to go inside, but I stay in the woods very near the house so I can play with my dog and be safe. I also have a cat friend named Simba. He lets me hold him down and clean his face. I really like to groom my dog and cat so they look good.
My mom has sheep, a llama that stays with them as their guardian, five chickens, three guinea fowl, and even one lame turkey hen. She brought home a new puppy not too long ago, and I am having fund playing with the new pup. She likes to clean out my ears, and that can be a little annoying sometimes, but she is fun to run with. I’m trying to tech her to run fast and jump like me.
Just the last few weeks it has been hunting season where I live. My mom called all the neighbors to ask them to watch out for me. She brought a hunter’s orange safety vest and made a big bow for me to wear so anyone that was hunting would know that I am special, and not afraid of humans, so they should not be hunting for me. I’m confused by this hunting idea. I think one of my friends, a little buck, was taken in the hunt. I haven’t seen him for a long time now.
I’m really happy to be living in the woods by my family, but wish I could have a bedroom, or sleep inside with my dog. I sure like my family, people, and pets, and I bet you like your family, too. Every night when my mom returns home from work, she calls me and whistles for me. I know it is chow time when I hear her call so I run to see what good treat she has for me ! I’m trying to talk my mom into making a bowl of pasta for me !
Hope you have a happy and long life.

DEAR MELANIE AND STEVE,
I LEARNED OF DILLIE JUST RECENTLY AND AM SO IMPRESSED WITH YOUR KINDNESS AND LOVE OF ANIMALS. THIS IS THE MOST INCREDIBLE STORY THAT I HAVE SEEN IN MY SIXTY YEARS OF LIFE. IT GIVES ME AN OVERWHELMING FEELING OF WARMTH TO KNOW THAT THERE ARE STILL WONDERFUL PEOPLE IN THIS WORLD SUCH AS YOURSELVES. THIS DEER IS THE MOST ADORABLE ANIMAL AND I AM AMAZED AT HER INTELLIGENCE AND HAPPINESS TO BE LIVING IN YOUR HOME. I CHECK IN ON HER SEVERAL TIMES A DAY AND LOOK FORWARD TO DOING SO FIRST THING IN THE MORNING. WITH ALL THE UGLINESS IN THIS WORLD TODAY IT IS SO REFRESHING TO SEE THAT THERE ARE STILL PEOPLE LIKE YOU IN THIS WORLD. PLEASE IGNORE ANY NEGATIVE COMMENTS THAT YOU MIGHT RECEIVE ABOUT DILLIE AND KEEP IN MIND THAT THESE ARE THE ANIMALS IN THIS WORLD. I WISH YOU CONTINUED SUCCESS WITH THIS PRECIOUS PET. YOU BOTH DESERVE ALL THE GOOD LUCK THE WORLD HAS TO OFFER. ELAINE AND RICK

I just wanted to tell Dillie how wonderful it is to watch her, and share a little of her life. We live near downtown Cleveland, (the Tremont area) and we have Deer right here in the city. Theres vacant land that runs along train ave. and all the way to the flats, we have 5 deer that come up and eat the
crab apples and and tree bark etc, all year round, they really stop traffic, and are wonderful to see.
Fortunately they are not friendly or becoming tame.
I can't imagine what it would be like to live with one in the house.
Well thank you for letting us watch Dillie, its a wonderful thing, and makes my world a little nicer, Oh we have three strays that we adopted over the years two dogs and a cat, they want to say hi to Dillie too. They get to sleep on the bed and watch TV, Thanks again. Love you Dillie

Margherita: Dillie has access to the outdoors at all times. She hates rain and snow, and unfortunately we don't have much sun here in Ohio. She plays mostly outside in the morning from about 5 am to 9 am, then likes to go outside in the middle of the day for a brief walk around the acreage, and then at night she likes to be outside til after sunset. She has a barn if she wants to use it, but deer are very social animals and she sees the other pets and us as her herd and wants to be with ut all the time.

For thos of you that don't already know, Dillie is a farm-raised deer that is visually impaired. She was raised with a dog and is housebroken. You can learn more about here at www.dilliethedeer.net, and www.erah.evetsite.com. She wears a GPS tracking device on her collar in case she would be lost or stolen.
